Police Stop Reselling Guns Amid Crime Concerns

More than a dozen law enforcement agencies have ceased the practice of reselling used firearms, prompted by an investigation that revealed over 52,000 former police guns were involved in violent crimes between 2006 and 2022. This decision follows a joint probe by The Trace, CBS News, and Reveal, which highlighted the risks of resold police weapons resurfacing in robberies and homicides.

Four police departments, including those in Cincinnati and Sacramento, confirm they have stopped gun resales entirely, while others are re-evaluating their policies. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives has warned of the dangers associated with such sales, noting a significant connection between resold firearms and criminal activity. As budget constraints drive some agencies to continue the resale practice, the disparity in safety and cost-saving measures raises important questions about the responsibilities law enforcement has to its communities.
