Volusia County schools are integrating artificial intelligence technology to detect firearms on campus through a system known as ZeroEyes. This innovative approach, championed by co-founder Rob Huberty, connects to security cameras at schools to identify potential threats in real-time, a response driven by earlier tragedies like the Parkland shooting.
During the 2022-2023 school year, more than 80 weapons were discovered on campuses, prompting the district to adopt layered security measures, including the deployment of weapon detectors and K-9 units. Huberty emphasizes that AI monitoring complements traditional security efforts, and so far this school year, over 50 weapons have been located, with none being firearms. This initiative reflects a serious commitment to improving safety within schools.
