Kevin A. Batts, a 59-year-old aide to Senator Cory Booker, was arrested at the U.S. Capitol Monday night after he was found carrying a pistol without a license. Batts reportedly bypassed the metal detectors at the Hart Senate Office Building while being escorted by an unnamed member of Congress, as Capitol Police confirmed that all firearms are strictly prohibited on Capitol grounds regardless of permits.
As a special assistant to Booker since 2013 and a retired Newark police officer, Batts informed Capitol Police of his firearm, leading to his immediate arrest and a misdemeanor charge. The event coincided with Booker’s marathon speech addressing urgent threats to American democracy, raising questions about security protocols within the Capitol during high-profile events.
