Alarming Rates of Gun Suicides in Military Members

The rate of gun suicides among former and current military members in the United States remains a staggering public health concern, accounting for nearly 23 percent of all gun suicides in 2019. With 4,332 veterans taking their own lives using firearms that year, it translates to a veteran dying by gun suicide every two hours, revealing an urgent mental health crisis that demands immediate attention.

The concerning trend is exacerbated by the unique challenges faced by veterans, including higher access to firearms and increased rates of mental health issues such as PTSD. Statistics show that approximately 72 percent of suicides among military members involve a firearm, highlighting the critical need for effective policy interventions like extreme risk protection orders and improved access to mental health services.
