Army Officer Critiques XM7 Rifle’s Combat Readiness

An Army infantry officer has publicly criticized the XM7 rifle, claiming it is “unfit for use as a modern service rifle.” Captain Braden Trent’s research, which involved interviewing over 150 soldiers and disassembling multiple XM7 rifles, argues that the weapon’s limited 20-round magazine leads to rapid ammunition depletion and that significant wear occurs after just 2,000 rounds, potentially compromising its accuracy and reliability in combat.

Trent presented his findings at the Modern Day Marine exhibition, drawing attention to the XM7’s tactical limitations, especially given the weight increase compared to the M4A1 carbine. While representatives from Sig Sauer and the Army dispute his conclusions, stating that the XM7 is tested to withstand over 20,000 rounds without performance issues, Trent’s call for a reassessment of the rifle raises important questions about the gear provided to soldiers in combat situations.
