Art Project Honors Lives Lost to Police Violence

The ‘Say Their Names’ project returns for a community salon in Woodlawn, showcasing youth-led research and commissioned art that honors nearly 1,000 Black victims of police killings. This initiative aims to shift focus from the violent deaths of these individuals to who they were in life, including their passions and how they are remembered by loved ones, with organizers emphasizing the importance of healing and education within the community.

Scheduled for Friday at the Experimental Station, the salon will feature presentations by youth researchers alongside visual and performing artists who creatively respond to the stories documented in the project. Attendees will witness original pieces from local artists such as poet Donna “Dante” Marie Gary and visual artist Pugs Atomz, which seek to deepen public understanding of police violence. This effort is not just about memorializing the deceased; it is also about inspiring change and fostering meaningful dialogue around the realities of racial violence in America.
