Art Show Provides Comfort for Families of Gun Violence Victims

An art show in Philadelphia creates a moment of solace for families grieving loved ones lost to gun violence, gathering at Ezekiel Baptist Church for “Peace in Philly.” The exhibition features personal portraits that illuminate the lives of those murdered, including Danielle Shaw-Oglesby’s daughter, Dominique, who was just 23 when she was killed in 2018. The event, held in honor of Gun Violence Awareness Month, highlights the ongoing impact of violence in the community.

Curated by Zarinah Lomax, the show emphasizes the therapeutic power of art in processing grief, with many attendees finding connection and healing through shared experiences. With studies indicating that art therapy can alleviate PTSD symptoms, participants express the lasting emotional connection they maintain with their lost loved ones through these artistic tributes. “The art is just so beautiful, and it’s staying, it stays with me,” says Shaw-Oglesby, reflecting a shared hope for healing among the families.
