The Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office is considering charging the parents of two boys, ages seven and nine, who were found playing with a loaded handgun. A dramatic confrontation, captured by drone footage, showed deputies persuading the children to relinquish the weapon, an incident that Sheriff John Allen stated could have ended in tragedy if not for the department’s drone program.
Following the incident, which took place in February, the sheriff’s office has opted to focus on providing support rather than immediate criminal charges. This includes connecting the family with behavioral health services consisting of approximately 100 hours of social services, as investigators look into how the children accessed the firearm. Sheriff Allen emphasized the importance of addressing the root causes of the incident, asserting that they are aware of where the learned behavior originated.
