Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez and NYPD Commissioner Jessica S. Tisch announce a Gun Buyback event on Saturday at Cornerstone Baptist Church in Bedford-Stuyvesant, where participants can receive a $500 bank card for surrendering operable handguns and assault rifles. This initiative is part of a continued effort to combat gun violence, which has seen a significant decline in shootings by 23 percent this year.
Previously, Brooklyn’s buyback events have led to the surrender of over 500 firearms, contributing to the removal of more than 1,300 illegal guns from the streets. Pastor Lawrence E. Aker III pledged the church’s support for enhancing community safety, echoing the city’s commitment to reducing gun-related incidents. The program ensures anonymity for those turning in weapons, aiming to engage the local community effectively.
