On June 22, the prompt and courageous response of church security staff at CrossPointe Community Church in Wayne County, Michigan, prevented a potential mass shooting. A 31-year-old gunman, armed with a long gun and wearing a tactical vest, opened fire as he approached the church, where around 150 parishioners were attending services. Thanks to the intervention of a parishioner who struck the shooter with his vehicle and staff members who returned fire, the assailant was fatally shot. One staff member suffered a leg injury, but fortunately, it is not life-threatening.
Wayne Police Chief Ryan Strong praised the church staff’s “heroic” actions that likely saved numerous lives, highlighting their training for emergency situations. The assailant, who faced mental health issues, did not enter the church building. The police investigation is ongoing, with additional support from local, state, and federal agencies. As the community reflects on this close call, details surrounding the incident continue to unfold, including the potential motive behind the attack.
