A 50-year-old man from Collingwood, Ronald Mitchell, is now in police custody facing serious charges after being shot by an officer during a disturbance on May 21. Following the incident, which prompted a significant police response on Rhonda Road, Mitchell was treated for a gunshot injury before being charged with two counts of assaulting a peace officer and additional charges related to firearm possession and mischief.
The Special Investigations Unit is currently looking into the circumstances surrounding the shooting, as it does for all incidents resulting in injury or death involving police. Mitchell’s list of charges includes pointing a firearm and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose. A bail hearing is scheduled for June 4, raising questions about the alarming events that unfolded in a neighborhood already marked by a previous fire incident at his home.
