Colorado Governor Jared Polis has officially signed into law one of the nation’s most restrictive gun control measures, despite strong lobbying from gun rights advocates to reconsider the decision. The legislation mandates that individuals must now undergo two background checks, obtain a permit from a local sheriff’s department, and complete a certified firearms training course to buy, sell, or manufacture specific types of semi-automatic firearms.
Notably, the law also prohibits rapid-fire conversion devices like bump stocks and requires the Colorado Parks and Wildlife to maintain a database of individuals who complete the training, raising concerns among opponents about privacy and the potential creation of a government registry of gun owners. The implementation of these restrictions for new purchases will begin in August 2026, marking a significant shift in the state’s approach to gun control.
