Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser is uniting with 15 other states in a legal challenge against the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) regarding its controversial plan to redistribute thousands of machine gun conversion devices (MCDs) across the nation. These devices, known as forced reset triggers (FRTs), effectively allow semi-automatic firearms to function akin to machine guns, with the potential to fire up to 20 rounds per second, surpassing military-grade rates. The lawsuit seeks to halt this redistribution, citing increased violence and the presence of such devices at numerous crime scenes.
Weiser argues that the ATF’s actions violate existing federal laws that prohibit the ownership of machine guns and their conversion devices. The complaint, filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland, states that more than 100,000 FRTs have been distributed in recent years, coinciding with a staggering 1,400% rise in machine gun incidents from 2019 to 2021. This multistate effort aims to safeguard communities by challenging the perceived leniency of federal authorities in enforcing gun laws.
