Columbus Police Promote Gun Lock Safety for Families

The Columbus Police Department is intensifying efforts to promote gun lock safety and secure storage in households, particularly those with children. This initiative responds to increasing gun violence and accidental shootings involving minors, a trend that has raised alarms among law enforcement officials nationwide.

Sgt. Garren Williams underscores the necessity of utilizing safety locks and advocates for more robust solutions such as gun safes or lockboxes for homeowners with firearms. The department, in collaboration with Safe Kids Columbus, provides free gun locks to residents on a first-come, first-served basis, aiming to reduce the risk of unintentional injuries, which remain a leading cause of death for children aged 0 to 17 in the U.S.
