A convicted felon, Anthony Leroy Wellman, 58, is facing severe weapons charges after Iredell County Sheriff’s Office deputies discovered multiple firearms at his residence while investigating a report of a breaking and entering. Wellman had reported that a suspect broke into his safe, making off with a significant amount of cash, but the ensuing investigation revealed that he was unlawfully in possession of firearms due to his felony background, including a charge of habitual impaired driving.
During the investigation, deputies seized not only numerous firearms and ammunition but also a weapon of mass destruction from Wellman’s home. His apparent lack of cooperation during the confiscation led to a detention, and he subsequently was charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and felony possession of a weapon of mass destruction. Wellman was released on a $50,000 bond, but the case raises serious concerns about the effectiveness of gun possession laws for individuals with criminal histories.
