Four police officers in Anaheim, California, fatally shot 30-year-old Alexis Salas, mistakenly believing he was armed with a handgun during a pursuit. Video footage released by the Anaheim Police Department shows the tense encounter, which began when a 911 caller reported Salas threatening him at a gas station.
After initially failing to find Salas, officers later located him and believed he reached for his waistband before fleeing on foot. Despite repeated commands to drop his weapon, officers opened fire when they believed he pointed a gun at them, only to later discover that the weapon was a semi-automatic BB gun. The incident is currently under investigation by the California Department of Justice, with officials stating the review could take up to a year to complete.
