This proposal comes in the wake of the Sandy Hook families’ decade-long fight to hold Remington accountable for the 2012 school shooting, culminating in a $73 million settlement in 2022.
The bill allows states to create their own civil action laws against gun makers that violate state regulations, a necessary step as federal laws provide significant protections for the firearms industry. Rep. Steve Stafstrom, a supporter of the bill, emphasizes that this change would align Connecticut with a handful of other states that have implemented similar measures to address the complex legal landscape surrounding gun-related lawsuits.
