A 41-year-old man from Trumbull, Connecticut, has been sentenced to 41 months in federal prison for unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition, following a parole officer’s search of his residence. Jack Jakups, a previously convicted felon, was found with a significant arsenal including a Diamondback 9mm handgun, a ghost gun, and over 300 rounds of ammunition, making his case particularly alarming in the context of gun control discussions.
Jakups, who had been released to Connecticut’s Special Parole program in January 2019, had a criminal history that included serious offenses such as robbery and burglary. The discovery of these weapons came as part of a routine parole check conducted by his officer and the ATF in November 2021. As Jakups prepares to report to prison on August 8, questions are raised about the effectiveness of parole systems in preventing recidivism in cases involving firearms.
