A Cuyahoga County sheriff’s deputy fired four shots at a fleeing suspect who was ultimately found to be unarmed, as shown in recently released body camera footage from the incident on May 16. Deputy Isen Vajusi attempted to pull over a Dodge Durango for traffic violations when the driver sped off, leading to a chase that resulted in a crash. Despite believing the suspect, 19-year-old Kamal Bridges, was reaching for a weapon, authorities found no gun on him or in the area where he ran.
The chase ended with Bridges being taken into custody after Vajusi executed a precision immobilization technique to disable the vehicle. Although no firearm was discovered initially, police did locate a gun inside the vehicle after apprehending Bridges. The shooting incident has reignited scrutiny regarding the effectiveness and conduct of the Downtown Safety Patrol, which has faced criticism for several high-profile cases in the past year. Debates continue over the future of the unit and funding concerns amid rising public safety issues in Cleveland.
