Wake Forest University sociology professor David Yamane will present his insights on American gun culture at a public event in Atascadero on June 25. The talk, entitled “Guns in America: A Civil Conversation in Uncivil Times,” coincides with the release of his book, “Gun Curious: A Liberal Professor’s Surprising Journey Inside America’s Gun Culture,” where he reflects on his unexpected exploration of firearms as a lifelong liberal. Attendees will have the opportunity to participate in a Q-and-A session and a book signing, as well as win raffle prizes such as a Ruger 10/22 rifle.
Yamane’s journey is notable for starting at age 42 without any previous experience with guns, prompting a deeper sociological inquiry into the perceptions and realities surrounding gun ownership. He observes that many gun owners feel stigmatized and often conceal their ownership, an experience he relates as he navigated his newfound interest. Yamane aims to foster productive dialogue on gun ownership and safety, emphasizing that while the Second Amendment is interpreted differently, a shared goal exists in preventing unauthorized access to firearms.
