An Eau Claire man, 40-year-old Garrett Waldinger, is charged with making a straw purchase of a firearm for a felon linked to a recent police manhunt. The allegations state that Waldinger purchased a gun for Leo Lacy, who is prohibited from owning firearms due to previous felony convictions, just two days before Lacy’s involvement in a series of criminal incidents that included pointing a gun at a store patron and fleeing from law enforcement.
The charges against Waldinger include obstructing an officer, and he now faces up to ten years in prison and a significant fine. After the purchase, Waldinger claimed the firearm was stolen from his vehicle, but surveillance footage reportedly captured him and Lacy together at the store where the gun was bought. Lacy’s prior criminal activities led to a chaotic police response, resulting in lockdowns at nearby schools as he attempted to evade capture.
