Cook Children’s Hospital in Fort Worth sees a troubling rise in firearm-related injuries among children, with 40 cases reported in just the first half of 2025, compared to 62 for all of last year. The program coordinator, Eric Gonzalez, attributes this increase to the growing number of firearms in homes and unsafe storage practices, particularly in Texas.
With schools closed and children spending more time at home, the hospital emphasizes the importance of securing firearms as a preventative measure. Gonzalez notes that injuries can stem from various types of guns, including BB and airsoft guns, which can cause serious harm. To aid in this initiative, Cook Children’s distributes free cable locks to families and promotes safety education through their “Three T’s”: Talk, Teach, and Take action. The urgency for this message aligns with Gun Violence Awareness Day on June 6, highlighting the need for ongoing conversations about firearm safety to protect children.
