Feds Address Firearm Smuggling to Combat Violence Cycle

Federal authorities are taking action to disrupt the smuggling of firearms and ammunition to Mexican cartels, emphasizing the critical need to end the “cycle of violence.” During a news conference at the Juarez-Lincoln International Bridge, officials showcased recent firearm seizures while calling for enhanced collaboration between U.S. and Mexican authorities to tackle this issue effectively.

Special Agent Michael Weddel highlighted that firearms from the U.S. are fueling violent conflicts in Mexico, noting that these weapons are essential for cartels to maintain control and facilitate drug trafficking. With recent designations of major Mexican cartels as foreign terror organizations, law enforcement agencies are intensifying their efforts to prosecute straw purchasers and prevent illegal exports, aiming to reduce the tragic impacts of gun violence on both sides of the border.
