Research from Rutgers University indicates that neighborhoods with elevated firearm violence experience significantly lower rates of dental care utilization and higher instances of tooth loss, or edentulism. The study, encompassing data from over 20,000 census tracts across major U.S. cities from 2014 to 2022, reveals that safety concerns stemming from violence deter individuals from seeking routine dental care, while stress associated with chronic violence may contribute to unhealthy behaviors that further compromise oral health.
