The second March for Peace in Garfield Park is set to commence this Saturday, bringing together community members and leaders to promote unity and combat gun violence. Starting at 10 a.m. after a gathering at 9 a.m., the march will traverse key streets in the neighborhood, culminating at the park, while also debuting the Chicago Basketball Festival this weekend, which celebrates the sport and its local legends.
Last year’s event led to a significant 55% decrease in homicides in Garfield Park during the summer period, aided by a truce brokered among local street organizations by Talei Thompson. With participation from basketball greats and local artists, this year’s festivities aim to expand the truce initiative, inviting all city groups involved in gun violence to participate in creating lasting peace.
