The Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR) announces the discovery of a second deer infected with chronic wasting disease (CWD) in Berrien County, located just 400 yards from the site of the state’s first case identified in January. This 4.5-year-old white-tailed buck was harvested by a landowner aiding the DNR’s ongoing response efforts to contain the disease.
Following the initial detection in a neighboring county, officials established a CWD-management zone aimed at protecting local deer populations. Georgia DNR Commissioner Walter Rabon emphasizes the importance of collaboration with hunters and landowners in the area to monitor and manage the situation effectively. CWD, caused by infectious prions, raises concerns due to its potential impact on wildlife health, although it is not known to pose a risk to humans.
