Gun expert Greg Lickenbrock estimates that civilian firearm sales alone reached about $9 billion in 2021, emphasizing that these figures are difficult to confirm due to the industry’s lack of transparency and the predominance of privately held companies.
With nearly 15 million firearms produced in the U.S. in 2023, the challenge in identifying precise economic impacts becomes evident. Lickenbrock notes that only six of the top 30 gun manufacturers are publicly traded, making it tough to gauge the industry’s true financial landscape. This opaqueness, he argues, is unique to the gun sector and contrasts sharply with financial reporting norms in other industries, such as pharmaceuticals.
