Gun Violence Claims 5,700 Hispanic Lives in 2023

More than 5,700 Hispanics died by gunfire in the United States in 2023, according to a study by the Violence Policy Center (VPC). Of these fatalities, 3,284 were homicides, representing a staggering 57 percent of the deaths that year, while gun suicides accounted for 2,198 lives lost. Since 2002, over 83,000 Hispanics have died from gun-related incidents, with nearly two-thirds of those deaths categorized as homicides.

The VPC study highlights a troubling trend: as the traditional gun market dwindles, the firearms industry is increasingly targeting Hispanic communities for sales and political influence. VPC Executive Director Josh Sugarmann emphasizes the urgent need for comprehensive data on Hispanic victims, as the true numbers may be significantly higher than reported. Such disparities in data collection put vulnerable communities at an increased risk, raising questions about the effectiveness of current violence prevention strategies.
