Howard Committee Considers Deer Feeding Ban

The Village of Howard’s newly formed Deer Control Committee is evaluating a proposed ban on feeding deer as a strategy to manage the swelling deer population in local neighborhoods. At its first meeting, members acknowledged a significant rise in resident complaints about deer damaging gardens, with estimates suggesting local populations have surged from around five to a dozen in some areas, prompting immediate concern among homeowners.

Committee member Tom Hansen attributes the growing deer issues to milder winters and urban feeding habits. Residents have been reported to treat deer like pets, with some regularly leaving food out, which could create health problems for the animals. As the committee explores options, including modifying bowhunting regulations to further control the population, community members are pushing for natural wildlife management practices that encourage deer to thrive in their own habitats.
