The Illinois legislature has approved a significant bill mandating all local law enforcement agencies, including those in Lake and McHenry counties, to participate in the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives’ eTrace platform. This legislation, backed by Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul, is designed to enhance crime investigations by enabling law enforcement to submit firearm tracing information for crime guns directly to the ATF National Tracing Center, a vital tool for identifying gun traffickers and violent crime patterns.
Previously voluntary, participation in the eTrace platform will now be compulsory when law enforcement agencies recover firearms linked to criminal activity, including abandoned or unlawfully possessed guns. Raoul emphasized that implementing such measures is crucial to addressing gun violence and ensuring that police agencies have access to the best resources for effectively tracking guns used in crimes. As this bill heads to Governor J.B. Pritzker for signing, it signifies a proactive approach to tackling gun violence in Illinois.
