Imperial County Launches Firearm Relinquishment Program

The Imperial County District Attorney’s Office and Sheriff’s Office have initiated a targeted firearm relinquishment program to enforce court orders that prohibit certain individuals from possessing guns. This initiative, part of California’s first court-based firearm relinquishment program established under Assembly Bill 178, received $1.2 million in funding and focuses on cases involving criminal protective and civil restraining orders where individuals must surrender their firearms legally.

Designed to improve community safety, the program promotes collaboration among local law enforcement and the judiciary, facilitating clear guidance for those required to relinquish firearms. District Attorney George Marquez emphasized that this initiative strengthens law enforcement’s ability to protect victims and enforce the law, ensuring compliance with court orders and enhancing the overall safety of the community.
