J6 Riot Participant Ordered to Pay $500K in Damages

A federal jury has ordered David Walls-Kaufman, a participant in the January 6 Capitol riot, to pay $500,000 to the family of Metropolitan Police Officer Jeffrey Smith, whom he assaulted during the chaos in the Capitol. The jury’s decision includes $380,000 in punitive damages and $60,000 in compensatory damages, reflecting the grave aftermath of Smith’s assault, which contributed to his suicide just days later.

The case has drawn attention not only for its staggering financial implications but also for the emotional toll depicted by Erin Smith, the officer’s widow, who argues that Walls-Kaufman’s actions caused profound psychological and physical trauma that led to her husband’s tragic decision. While Walls-Kaufman maintains his innocence, denying any assault, the jury’s decision represents a controversial conclusion in the ongoing dialogue surrounding accountability for actions taken during the Capitol riot.
