Hours after Jackson’s Hal’s St. Paddy’s Parade, which attracted over 100,000 attendees and raised money for Children’s of Mississippi Hospital, a shooting left one person dead and seven others injured. Jackson Police Chief Joseph Wade reported that despite the presence of more than 80 officers dedicated to parade security, the gun violence erupted as celebrations concluded, overshadowing the event’s success.
Former U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, present for the parade, emphasized the unique problem of gun violence in America, stating, “There are St. Paddy’s Day parades all over the world, and it’s only in America that we have gun violence.” The Capitol Police are leading the investigation into the shooting, which occurred in a post-parade context, prompting calls for community accountability and enhanced violence prevention measures to address escalating issues among youth and safety in public events.
