A Kansas City University medical student, Jenna Cook, is channeling her experience as a survivor of the Route 91 music festival mass shooting into a career in emergency medicine, aiming to combat gun violence. Since that tragic night in 2017, where a gunman killed 58 and injured nearly 500, Cook has dedicated herself to understanding and addressing the consequences of firearm violence, including the physical and psychological effects on survivors.
By working with Care Beyond the Boulevard, a Kansas City clinic that provides healthcare to the homeless, Cook is enhancing her skills while focusing on preventative measures against violence. With emergency physicians making up less than 5% of all doctors, Cook’s journey reflects a growing commitment to making a difference amid alarming rates of homicide and non-fatal shootings in her community.
