Lexington Cancels UK ROTC Training Agreement

Lexington’s City Council has voted to terminate a partnership that permitted the University of Kentucky’s ROTC program to conduct training exercises at Hisle Farm Park, following community concerns about the potential psychological impact on residents. Many visitors, like Deana Mullins, report feeling triggered by the presence of military activities in what they consider a peaceful retreat, citing personal losses related to gun violence as a source of their distress.

Vice Mayor Dan Wu indicates that alternatives for the ROTC program, including a facility at Bluegrass Station, are being explored to meet their training needs. Mullins, while expressing her understanding of the military’s role, emphasizes the importance of considering the emotional scars borne by those affected by violence, stating that those who have not experienced such loss cannot fully grasp the situation.
