About 50 children gathered at the University of Kentucky’s Cornerstone Building this week to participate in a program designed to help them cope with trauma linked to gun violence. The initiative, led by ONE Lexington Director Devine Carama, emphasizes essential skills like conflict resolution and emotional navigation, targeting a growing concern as gun-related incidents in the area have spiked among youth. With eight gun-related homicides this year involving individuals aged 10 to 29, the program aims to instill bravery and proactive behaviors in these young lives.
In addition to the alarming number of homicides, Lexington has reported a notable decrease in shooting incidents, down to 12 so far this year compared to an average of 31. This unique program not only addresses immediate trauma but also seeks to foster a culture of resilience among the youth. As Carama encourages participants to be “brave enough to do the right thing,” his efforts highlight a community-driven response to a pressing public safety issue.
