Louisiana’s New Law Allows Permits-Free Concealed Carry

On March 5, 2024, Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry signed a law allowing residents over 18 to carry concealed firearms without a permit, effective July 4, 2024. This law significantly expands the number of individuals who can lawfully carry firearms, increasing potential permit holders from approximately 250,000 to around 4.5 million, which creates a pivotal discussion among businesses about risk management and employee safety.

Critics express concerns regarding the lack of required training, with many individuals now capable of carrying concealed firearms without prior instruction. Although early data suggests no significant increase in gun violence following similar laws in other states, businesses are encouraged to revisit their policies on firearm possession. The law also affirms employers’ rights to restrict firearms on premises, while providing immunity to permit holders, potentially impacting litigation risks for companies in workplace incidents involving firearms.
