Massachusetts Attorney General Andrea Joy Campbell announced a lawsuit against the Trump administration to halt the distribution of Forced Reset Triggers (FRTs), devices that can convert semiautomatic rifles into machine guns, allowing rates of fire up to 900 rounds per minute. Joined by 16 other state attorneys general, Campbell argues that the administration’s reversal of a Biden-era policy allowing the seizure of nearly 12,000 of these devices poses a significant threat to public safety amid rising gun violence, highlighted by over 3,000 mass shootings in the U.S. in the past five years.
The lawsuit follows the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) classifying FRTs as machine guns, which are prohibited under federal law, only to have the Trump administration latterly abandon these restrictions. Campbell and her coalition describe this decision as “reckless,” asserting that it undermines citizens’ right to feel safe in homes and communities. They seek a preliminary injunction to prevent the re-distribution of these dangerous devices and challenge the administration’s disregard for existing gun control laws.
