Madison Police Report Increase in Accidental Shootings

The City of Madison is currently experiencing a troubling increase in accidental shootings, prompting police to emphasize the importance of gun safety as summer approaches. Assistant Chief Angela Kamoske notes that most of these incidents stem from unsafe handling and storage of firearms, particularly as warmer weather brings more people outdoors.

In May 2025, Madison reported 51 shots fired incidents, a slight increase from 48 in May 2024, with many accidents involving children gaining access to guns. The Madison Police Department is responding by offering free gun locks at all district locations, highlighting the need for community involvement in reducing gun-related incidents. This local trend contrasts with a national decrease in gun violence, raising concerns about the safe management of firearms as the summer months draw near.
