A 50-year-old man, Manuel Alvarez, is in critical condition after being shot by a Hillsborough County deputy during a domestic violence call in Riverview, Florida. The incident unfolded early Sunday morning when deputies responded to reports that Alvarez had assaulted his girlfriend and set fire to items in their home. Upon arrival, deputies found the victim with visible injuries and, when they attempted to confront Alvarez, he emerged from an upstairs bedroom brandishing a firearm.
Deputy Shawn Swinford, responding to Alvarez’s threats to shoot, fired his weapon, striking Alvarez twice in the upper torso. He underwent surgery at Tampa General Hospital following the encounter. The deputy, who joined the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office in July 2024 after eight years in Indiana law enforcement, has been placed on paid leave while the Florida Department of Law Enforcement investigates the incident. The event raises concerns about police response in domestic violence situations and the complexities of using force in such circumstances.
