Michigan Lawmaker Proposes Free Doe Hunting Licenses

State Rep. Jennifer Wortz (R-Quincy) has introduced House Bill 4206, proposing to offer two free antlerless deer licenses to every Michigan hunter. This initiative aims to encourage hunters to take more does as the deer population in southern Michigan has soared, leading to significant agricultural damage and over 58,000 vehicle collisions involving deer in 2023.

Wortz’s plan comes in response to the Department of Natural Resources’ efforts to promote doe hunting to control breeding. By making doe hunting more financially accessible, Wortz believes this strategy will not only foster outdoor engagement but also contribute to essential conservation efforts. The bill is currently under review by the House Committee on Natural Resources and Tourism.
