Millions of Kids in Homes with Loaded Guns, New Study Finds

A recent study by the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) reveals that nearly 5 million children in the United States reside in homes where guns are both loaded and unsecured. This alarming statistic comes in light of a rising trend in gun-related incidents among youth, making firearms the leading cause of death for children and teens in the country, surpassing car accidents. To combat this issue, CHOP is actively distributing free firearm safety devices, such as cable locks, in the Philadelphia area to encourage safe storage practices.

The study highlights that approximately 30 million children live in homes with guns, indicating a significant public health crisis that has drawn attention from health professionals and law enforcement. In response to recent tragic incidents involving accidental shootings—like the case of a 12-year-old who was fatally shot—officials are advocating for parental awareness around gun safety. With educational initiatives underway, experts are striving to reduce the risk of firearm-related injuries among children through proactive community engagement and resources.
