The Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks (FWP) reminds hunters that the deadline to apply for deer and elk permits is April 1, just weeks away. In an effort to enhance transparency, the 2025 hunting regulations now direct applicants to updated online drawing statistics and a clearer explanation of the state’s bonus point system, addressing previous confusion about odds and application processes.
Unlike past years, hunters will no longer see potentially misleading historical data in printed guides. Changes are a response to a recent legislative audit highlighting issues with residency status, which limits nonresidents to 10% of permits, and the impact of landowner preference applications. With the May 1 deadline for moose, sheep, goat, and bison licenses also approaching, FWP encourages early applications to ensure hunters have the best chance at success.
