New Law Shields Domestic Violence Survivors from Gun Abuse

Illinois’ new Karina’s Law officially takes effect, requiring law enforcement to confiscate firearms from domestic violence abusers within 96 hours of an emergency protection order. Signed by Governor JB Pritzker in February, this legislation underscores a proactive approach to safeguarding survivors by limiting access to firearms during critical times of crisis.

The law is named after Karina G. who tragically lost her life to domestic violence, bringing attention to the urgent need for such protections. As police enforce these measures starting today, the initiative aims to prevent further tragedies and support victims in reclaiming their lives. For those in need, resources such as the Illinois Domestic Violence Hotline remain available for immediate assistance.
