NYC Destroys 3,600 Seized Guns, Honors Violence Victims

New York City officials destroy nearly 3,600 illegal firearms using a wood-chipper machine, a stark reminder of the ongoing gun violence crisis, just one day after the tragic shooting death of 61-year-old Excenia Mette. Mayor Eric Adams emphasizes the importance of this destruction, stating, “These are weapons of destruction, weapons of pain, weapons of chaos that we are removing off our streets,” while the remnants will be transformed into a memorial honoring victims of gun violence at a local school.

The handover of the metal scraps to students at the School of Cooperative Technical Education in East Harlem signifies a community effort to confront the trauma caused by gun violence. So far, over 21,400 guns have been seized during Adams’ administration, highlighting the relentless push against illegal firearms amidst a growing number of ghost guns—untraceable weapons rising sharply since 2018. The combined effort aims not only to reduce the presence of firearms but to foster remembrance for those affected by this crisis.
