The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) introduces proposed changes to its deer hunting regulations, aiming to modernize the tagging process and bolster opportunities for youth hunters. Central to these changes is the introduction of electronic carcass tags accessible via the HuntFishNY mobile app, which allows hunters to submit immediate harvest reports, enhancing accountability and efficiency in wildlife management.
This initiative includes a reduction in the harvest reporting deadline for paper tags from seven days to 48 hours, encouraging timely data collection. Additionally, the DEC’s proposal extends the Deer Management Assistance Program (DMAP) permit renewal cycle from three to five years, removing caps on tags per hunter based on land size, which could significantly aid land management strategies. Public comments on these proposed regulations are open until August 18, 2025.
