Off-duty NYPD Officer Shot in Astoria Ambush

An off-duty NYPD officer is recovering after being shot in the leg during an ambush by two masked assailants in Astoria, Queens, early Sunday morning. The officer, driving a neon-green BMW with a distinctive license plate, was targeted at approximately 6:30 a.m. at the intersection of 31st Road and 21st Street, resulting in a graze wound. Law enforcement quickly apprehended the suspects, who both had a history of serious criminal offenses, including robbery and aggravated harassment.

The shooting has raised concerns among local residents, as many expressed disbelief that such violence could occur in their neighborhood. Comments from locals highlight a growing unease about public safety, with one stating, “This area is supposed to be a safe place.” The Police Benevolent Association noted that while they are relieved the officer is stable, this incident underscores a troubling trend of rising crime that endangers both police and civilians. The event occurred outside a ShotSpotter zone, which is typically used to detect gunfire in urban areas.
