A Chicago police officer, identified as 36-year-old Krystal Rivera, is shot and killed during an armed confrontation in the Chatham neighborhood late Thursday night. Rivera, a four-year veteran of the department, was part of a tactical team conducting an investigatory stop related to a suspected weapon when the situation escalated into a foot chase that ended inside an apartment, where Rivera was ultimately fatally shot.
Authorities report that two individuals fled the apartment but were arrested soon after, with multiple weapons recovered from the scene. Rivera is being remembered as a dedicated officer and mother who aimed to improve her community, while the investigation continues as law enforcement reviews body-worn camera footage and the Civilian Office of Police Accountability takes over the case.
