Pennsylvania launches a significant initiative to curb firearm suicides by offering $1 million in grants aimed at local communities. With suicides constituting over half of Pennsylvania’s more than 1,900 gun-related deaths in 2022, the state’s Commission on Crime and Delinquency emphasizes the urgency of public health interventions targeting vulnerable groups, including youth and rural populations.
The grants, which prioritize proposals from high-need areas, will support various projects such as public education campaigns and safer gun-storage programs. Interested organizations are encouraged to participate in a webinar on July 21, with applications due by September 9. Given the alarming statistic that over 90% of self-inflicted gunshot-related hospitalizations result in death, this funding aims to foster comprehensive strategies for suicide prevention throughout the Commonwealth.
