Project Longevity officially launched in Norwich in May 2024, focusing on reducing gun violence by providing skills training and support to individuals at high risk, including former felons and those facing homelessness. Recently, seven participants graduated from the program’s welding course, each receiving an OSHA 10-hour certification, which opens doors to living-wage job opportunities in a region that desperately needs skilled workers.
The program operates through one-on-one coaching and community outreach, empowering clients to transform their lives. “We hope to be a part of their story that they’re telling,” says Kate Gunning, the statewide coordinator, emphasizing the importance of mentorship and connection to resources. With support from local law enforcement and city officials, Project Longevity continues to grow, aiming to positively impact Norwich’s violent crime landscape while fostering second chances for its participants.
